As if her unique and beautifully bizarre prints weren't enough to win my artistic affection, the first sentence of Sophie Blackall's bio made me want to move to Brooklyn just to befriend her:
Born in 1970, Sophie Blackall grew up in Australia where she learned to draw on the beach with sticks, which has not altogether helped her sense of perspective.
And then there's her charming suggestions for how to use the cardboard sleeve in which each print is mailed:
Each print is signed and dated and shipped with care in a serious, sturdy, cardboard envelope which you can put to use later as a wobble board, a fan or a convenient rectangle for sitting on damp grass.
More than just adept at clever word-play, Sophie's prints are some of the most striking and visually interesting I've seen on Etsy, and I would love to own about seven of them. Being that I'm nearly out of wall space in my apartment, I knew I had to share them here so that some of you will hopefully buy them and/or gift them, as I verily intend to do.
I love how half of her prints read as artistic "I saw you"s, featuring tiny stories about people she's perhaps seen around New York City, on the C, in Central Park, or even at a friend's party. There's no way to tell if her tiny stories are real or imagined, but I like to imagine them as a little bit of both.
