Ok, everyone, I have a confession: I can't braid hair. I mean, I can do plain old pigtail braids, but I cannot do ANYTHING fancy, and both of my daughters have bobbed hair (thank goodness) that doesn't need many accoutrements. However, I would LOVE to be able to do fancy braids. I've researched hair blogs, I've watched YouTube tutorials, I've looked at the "how to braid hair" step-by-step instructions in magazines. And still, I am completely inept. I don't know if it's that I'm watching someone, and so the image is reversed when I look in a mirror and try to emulate the steps, but whatever the reason I CANNOT do it.
Here's what I'd like to try:

I had this done (by my hairdresser) for a dear friend's wedding in which I was a bridesmaid, and I loved it so much I didn't want to take it out at the end of the night.
Here's a step-by-step tutorial AND video from Emily Frame that I'm pretty sure would be helpful if I had any skills at all in the hair-braiding arena.

Can anyone give me other advice, or point me towards another helpful tutorial? My growing-out bangs and I thank you in advance.

I can't help too much with braiding tips, but you spoke of growing out bangs? This is the way I've been wearing my hair lately. I really like it: http://www.cutegirlshairstyles.com/tips-and-tricks/short-hairstyles-single-front-twist/ and it's more of a twist than a braid-maneuver.

To practice breading, take some yarn and tie it around a door nob. Once your fingers know what to do, you will be able to do it on yourself without a mirror. I find it irritating and only look after I finish breading. Good luck!

I learned how to braid both my own & other people's hair with a book called "Braids & Bows" It's a crafty, make-your-own scrunchy book that I got in 1990, but it has step-by-step, color coded, tells you where to put yur hands instructions for french braids, twists, ropes, fishbones, the works!
