My parents are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this year with a party on the beach where they had their first date when they were FIFTEEN years old, if you can believe that. They're also both celebrating their 60th birthdays this year, so I kind of feel like I need to step up my game and get them some really great gifts.
For their 30th anniversary, my dad sent a letter to all of their guests asking for their best marital advice in order to keep my mom married to him for the next 30 years. All of their advice was then compiled into a book. This year we're asking all of the guests to send in a picture, from anytime over the last 40 years, which I plan on putting into a scrapbook and using that for their guestbook for the event.
I think at this point, with so much history behind them, the best gifts will play on their memories. I love thisx personalized wooden tray available on Etsy.

If you're the crafty sort, this seems like something you could create yourself. Personally, I like to leave this sort of thing to the experts. I can think of so many uses for this tray, that would keep it in heavy rotation.
I also love this burlap monogram, which would make a great wedding gift, too.

My parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in December 2011. I did some research and found that the 40th is to be celebrated by Ruby.
My brother, sister, and I decided to purchase a Red Japanese Maple for their yard. Sadly, when we bought it is really just looked like a stick - but now it has lovely leaves and is really pretty.
I love the idea that when they look at it they think of their anniversary and of us! And the tree will keep growing in their yard for the foreseeable future.

These are great ideas. My parents' 40th is in a few weeks, and I have NOTHING planned. I feel very, very bad.
