I love killing two birds with one stone when one bird is a shoe-storage problem and the other bird is the giant expanse of wall across from our bed that has been sad and empty and awkward for five years. Die, birds, die!
We bought two of these at Ikea, and they're my new favorite thing:
They're really shallow cabinets (only about a foot deep) with drawers that hinge out for shoe storage (or toy storage or book storage or baby clothes storage or craft supplies storage--whatever you need to hide away).
Here's another configuration, which shows what the inside looks like:
This is SUCH a lifesaver, since my previous shoe storage was a pile on the floor where Baby #2's crib needs to be set up, uh, really, really soon. (Eep.) Because they're just shy of 12 inches deep, they're perfect for small rooms, hallways, and other tight spaces, and the style is so classic they'll go with pretty much any decor. They come in black-brown, gray-brown, and white, and switching out the knobs to something a little more exciting would be a cinch.
Now I just need to figure out something safe to put on top of them, since the path in front is a narrow high-traffic lane (it leads to my other son's room) and also a new favorite lookout spot for the naughty cats.

I have the same issue: shoes in a pile on the floor. I see an IKEA trip in my future.
