A few months ago when I was persusing the pages of the Sundance Catalog, I noticed this super fabulous mason jar snow globe. See? Super cute.
I also couldn't help but notice that it was FORTY FIVE DOLLARS, and yet made out of a JAR. I thought I could probably make that myself without much effort and certainly for cheaper than $45.
(They also have mason jar snow globes at Anthropologie, but they don't have any water in them. That's totally cheating, imho.)
Here's what I used to make mine:
- A mason jar that I had around the house.
- A spaghetti sauce jar lid that I spray painted brown. (All the lids I have for this size jar are the two part canning lids, and I thought that didn't sound too water tight because after all most of the time this jar snow globe will be turned upside down.)
- Snow globe snow that I bought on Etsy. (You can probably use glitter in a pinch.)
- A few drops of glycerin that I ordered on Amazon because I read somewhere on the internet that I needed this for the consistency of the water, and if there's one thing I know how to do, it's to follow random instructions that I read somewhere on the internet.)
- Something to put in the snow globe. I was planning on using a bird candle that I bought in the dollar bin at Target, but it wouldn't fit in the jar. Luckily I had this old bottle brush tree lying around. How it will fare in the water, I have no idea.
- And hot glue.
Here are the steps. (Seriously, this was so easy.)
- Spray paint your jar lid.
- Hot glue your object of choice onto the jar lid.
3. Fill the mason jar with water, add a few drops of glycerin, and then add the snow.
4. Screw the lid on as tight as you can, and shake shake shake! You're done!

I've seen these all around the high-priced stores (Anthro) and the DIY all over the craft blogs, you're definitely in the trend this year. It looks so easy and so kitschy. Love it.
