I purchased this book shelf at a local thrift store for 5 bucks! I was looking for something for my son's room without spending a lot. So when I saw this bookshelf, I knew it was a perfect size, not to mention a quality piece of furniture.
I got one can of Rustoleum's high gloss white and spray painted the whole bookshelf. It's always nice if you can sand down a piece of furniture first, but not always necessary. After I spray painted it, I had leftover wallpaper that I measured perfectly to the back of the shelf. You could get heavy duty tape and really seal it in there if you don't want to commit to the wallpaper, or you can modge podge it in there where it is truly sealed. Either way works. This is really fun to do for a nursery! Here are the before pics:
