Every summer, my son Sprog, my husband and I all go on a summer trip together. It's a great way for the three of us to get quality time together and for us to show Sprog the larger world outside of his immediate teenager microcausm. We've been to Colorado, Florida, Arizona and last summer we spent it in San Francisco/Monterey/Big Sur (I really need to do a write up about that trip here, don't I?)

It's time to start planning this year's trip and we've been a bit stumped this year. Funds aren't as free-flowing for most people as they used to be, amIright? But we have managed to put a small bit in travel savings and so we started discussing some options last night to pass the time while I was in the emergency room (I'm fine, just a medication reaction) and we tossed around Seattle (and renting a car so we could drive down to Portland on the same trip), San Diego (with copious amounts of California coastal driving), a national park like Yellowstone, Yosemite or Glacer so we could force the kid to do some horseback riding and more white water rafting, or maybe Puerto Rico (my son doesn't have his passport yet, so this would be "foreign" without that need.)
So where would you go in June, with a 16 year old son (OH MY GOD) and not a crazy budget?

Oh I vote Puerto Rico! Or a New England tour? Or Santa Fe if you want to stay close to home and save some money.

We are going to Ocean City MD. It's 3 miles of gorgeous boards and waves! There are amusement park/ride/game areas, tons of boardwalk food, shops, copious beach laying, boogie boarding, parasailing. If *we* can save the money to go this summer, you can, too. We drive and that's approx 24 hrs. You can swing into Baltimore and go to the National Aquarium, or stay on 50 instead of doing the loop and drive right by the White House.

Oh you KNOW that I'm voting for Vancouver :) Also, I have a hookup at a gorgeous Vancouver hotel so I can get you the friends & family rate if it's not booked for your dates. AND WE HAVE VEGGIE POUTINE. And Stanley Park. And Whistler is only a 2 hour drive (tops) from Vancouver. And, uhh, I'm here. So. Team Vancouver!

I live in Northern VA (The DC suburbs) and I highly recommend a trip to our Nations Capital! Check out the DC Metro map to help you find a hotel in VA or MD close to the metro that might save you a little $$ instead of staying right in DC. Tons of things to do in DC, VA and MD (Baltimore aquarium and harbor are so close you could rent a car for the day trip) Have fun!
