I recently made the mistake of dumping my make-up bag out onto a freshly cleaned bathroom counter, and was met with an avalanche of eyeliner crumbs, powder blush dust and stray eyelash hairs that not only inspired a do-over on the bathroom counter but caused me to fear for the interior of my cosmetics pouch. I looked inside and, sure enough, it was downright gross in there.
Time to freshen up the make-up storage! My criteria: Big enough to hold my blush, powder, brushes, a few eye shadows and some eye and lip pencils; small enough to fit in my bathroom drawer. I prefer soft-side zipper pouches that can be easily tucked into a carry-on suitcase.
My two Etsy favorites:
Check out those ruffles! And I'm a sucker for Amy Butler fabric.
Sweet pleats, no?
My picks from the well-known brands:
Cool gold faux-leather in several different sizes.
The classic choice.
And the eventual winner!
Dana Herbert Lily Cosmetic Bag
I ended up choosing this one because of the size (I bought large), nice fabric choices (there are 18 of them) and, especially the plastic lining that I hope will resist the inevitable disintegration of my lipliner for a longer-than-average period.

I made my own with this pattern and it was easy to follow and turned out great. http://www.noodle-head.com/2010/04/gathered-clutch-tutorial.html
