Because I am bored and winter doldrummy, and also because we had to cancel our annual Christmas party when my sister decided to get MARRIED on my party date (HOW DARE SHE), I talked my husband into throwing a totally different party next month. A St. Valentine's Day Massacre party. With casino games. And bathtub gin. And FLAPPER DRESSES.
I should be concentrating on how to best turn my house into a Prohibition-era speakeasy, but I am spending an embarrassing amount of time online looking at flapper dresses. Anyone else out there who loves to dress up all crazy-like? I KNOW it's not just me!
There are all sorts of flapper costumes out there. Like these:
Left: $29.99 at Amazon.com Right: $39.99 at Amazon.com
But I'm kind of thinking I don't want a costume. No, I think I want a crazy expensive ACTUAL FLAPPER DRESS. Like these:
Left: $378 at Unique Vintage Right: $168 at Unique Vintage.
But I think I'm going to settle for this one:
$29.80 at Forever 21. What do you think? Not 1920s enough? Too fringey? I'm thinking the price is right and all I need to do is fling a feather boa over my shoulders and find myself a cigarette holder at the party store. Now to look up a bathtub gin recipe...

The black dress seems nice. Simple but elegant in style and easy to match the shoes.

I was a Gatsby Girl for Halloween and I have the perfect costume. It is black velvet on top and flowing pink silk(ish) fabric on the bottom. It came with a hat (that's like a beanie with sequins around the bottoms and a flower pinned on it) and I added a faux fur wrap, long pearls, a fake cigarette holder, black long gloves, and high heel Mary Janes. It was so cute and actually comfortable. I was thinking of putting it on EBay to sell. $29.80 is a GREAT deal. I paid over $100 for all my stuff.. Then again I did wait until the day of to find it all!

I think the F21 dress would be perfect. You can totally dress it up with some long pearls, a boa, fishnets and shoes! Plus you can add a beaded and feathered head piece and you'd be all set.
I am envious of your party.

I think that dress is perfect!

The dress is perfection. Costumey enough to work for the party but totally wearable after that. I went a little Gatsby for a wedding last fall with a dress I already had in my closet; the real kicker was the cloche hat: http://www.flickr.com/photos/agirlandaboy/3905514605/in/set-72157622256794386/

I love the F21 dress! I'd even vote for it if all were options.

I vote F21 dress too... and love the cigarette holder idea! If you can't find a cloche, maybe some pin curls? Darn it. Now I want to go to a costume party. ;)

Wait - didn't I mention the fact that YOU ARE ALL INVITED? Bathtub gin for everyone!

Love the Forever 21 dress!

Like the Forever 21 dress, but also like the costumes and the 2nd "actual" flapper dress - I think the first one is almost over the top (plus, yikes! on price)
I am so jealous - I wanna come! Too bad I'm on the other side of the country. Also: that I have no cool friends who would do this with me, so I can't even have one of my own.

I like the F21 dress, fringe is perfect. Don't forget the long pearls and something sparkly for your hair, and a freakin' huge cocktail ring!
